Rarely do we see such dramatic stories relating to sinkholes but we have to report that a Florida man was killed on April 11th when a sinkhole opened up beneath him while he was working laying pipe. John Smith, age 52, was digging a well when the sinkhole reported to be 35 feet deep opened up, The hole dragged Smith down and his truck and nearly five feet of dirt down on top top of him. The rig alone weighed nearly three tons. He was found by his partner and his family also was on scene to help dig Smith out. He was taken to the medical examiners office in Gainesville for autopsy. The accident occurred in Gilchrist County near the Lancaster Correctional Institute. Our condolences to the family. The story was reported int he Gainesville Sun, link below.
